A beautiful clear pond has been nicknamed “Monet’s Pond” in Seki City, Gifu Prefecture, Japan. (All photos by Mika Asai/AFLO).
Located on the approach to Nemichi Shrine, the pond has been attracting many visitors due to its close resemblance to the pond from French Impressionist painter Claude Monet’s famous “Water Lilies” paintings.
The artificial pond is fed by spring water and very clear. It was created in 1980 and locals planted water lilies some 16 years ago and also released carp in the pond.
A local tourism association set up a temporary tourist information center nearby to assist the many visitors it is attracting.
And a number of Monet’s “Water Lilies” paintings are currently on display at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum.
